Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States, with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reporting 697,000 deaths in 2020 alone. Fortunately, Dr. Toby Broussard – a renowned bariatric surgeon in the Edmond, Oklahoma – now offers a variety of extended bariatric procedures which have been proven to reduce the risk of cardiovascular events by up to 49 percent.
According to the CDC, Obesity-related conditions include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer. These are among the leading causes of preventable, premature death. Over 70 million adults in U.S. are obese (35 million men and 35 million women). 99 million are overweight (45 million women and 54 million men). Bariatric surgery is done to help lose excess weight and reduce risk of potentially life-threatening weight-related health problems, including: Heart disease and stroke, High blood pressure, Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) or nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), Sleep apnea, and Type 2 diabetes.
What is bariatric surgery? According to Dr. Broussard, it includes operations such as gastric bypass, duodenal switch, sleeve gastrectomy, and the Obalon Balloon System.

Gastric bypass involves creating a pouch of the stomach and re-routing the small intestine to it. Duodenal switch is the SADS procedure, where part of the small intestine is divided past the stomach and connected to the duodenum. Sleeve gastrectomy is a vertical division of the stomach that creates a narrow tubular stomach, while the Obalon Balloon System is the least invasive procedure, taking up room in the stomach to reduce food intake.
Before undergoing any of these procedures, patients must go through a series of assessments including medical and psychological screenings, discussions with dietitians and exercise physiologists, and a sleep assessment to ensure they understand every aspect of the process. The bariatric surgery is proud to have a large number of success stories from those who have had positive results.
