The book presents its information across 5 sections, each of which focuses on a unique aspect of the teaching process. The 5 tips do not depart radically from a traditional curriculum, but instead, seek to help teachers repurpose and utilize materials that are at hand to build a more constructive environment for students to learn and create.

This book joins a number of other teaching guides by Times 10 Publications in their ongoing “Hack Learning” series. All of these titles including “Make Writing” present actionable and accessible tips, strategies, and hacks that teachers new and old can make use of to better understand their students’ needs and learning requirements.

“Make Writing” was compiled by Stockman, drawing on a long career in the education industry and after taking into consideration conversations she has had with members of the teaching community. In this way, she has been able to craft this book with the needs of the average teacher in mind, and with unique strategies not commonly used in the current pedagogy.

Previously, Stockman has collaborated with Times 10 to publish a number of other teaching guides, and this is her second guide to focus entirely on the topic of writing.

This book, like the others in the series, focuses primarily on so-called “right now” strategies, or rather, ideas which can be immediately implemented using already accessible tools. In this way, Stockman intends to help teachers get a head start on the process instead of having to transition to an entirely new lesson plan.

One reviewer stated, “A fantastic introduction to how to bring students out of a quiet, in-your-seat drafting process and into a collaborative, dynamic manifestation of their thinking/writing. I’m looking forward to trying out these ideas in my class this fall. Quick, inspirational: just the kick-in-the-planbook you need to start the school year.”
