Mineola, NY – Finz & Finz, P.C. has announced Henry Dekyi Abrefa as the winner of the 2022 Devante Lane Scholarship essay contest. The essay contest was designed to contribute towards high school or college education for Bronx residents in memory of Devante Lane, who was killed on July 15, 2020, at age 22.
This year’s winning essay aligns with the goals for which the Devante Lane Scholarship was set up. Henry Dekyi Abrefa, in his essay, noted the impact of gun violence on families and the community stating that “Gun violence not only harms and separates individuals from their families, but it also has a detrimental effect on the general well-being and safety of our community.”
As a first-generation college student with a vast involvement in leadership, politics, educational, and extracurricular activities, Henry Dekyi Abrefa aims to learn more about gun violence and its impact while adopting a multifaceted strategy that combines advocacy, education, and assistance to individuals impacted by gun violence.
In his essay, the 2022 Devante Lane Scholarship essay contest winner notes that he aims to engage with experts and community leaders with firsthand knowledge of the issue to ensure a lasting solution is reached.
“I plan to use my voice and vote to advocate for policy change that will help to reduce gun violence in New York. This might include supporting politicians who are committed to stricter gun control laws or advocating for initiatives that increase funding for programs that work to prevent gun violence,” the entry reads.
The 2022 Devante Lane Scholarship essay contest was open exclusively to New York City residents currently enrolled in high school or college on August 26, 2022. The contest welcomes applicants aged 17 years or younger. Submissions closed on January 1, 2023, to allow proper time for interested participants to enter the contest.
Finz & Finz, P.C.‘s goal was to give room for young people to air their views on gun violence and how it has affected their community. The scholarship also aimed to create awareness by helping younger people understand the ways they can contribute to lowering the statistics while using their education to reduce the pandemic.
The 2022 Devante Lane Scholarship winning essay selection process was tough, according to the organizers. The scholarship was, however, awarded to the most convincing entry that has shown an all-around understanding of gun violence, its impact, and how to tackle it.
